Xiang embroidery is one of the four famous embroidery styles of China. It originated in the Shaping area of Kaifu District, Changsha. It is renowned for its unique stitching techniques such as the"Pengmao stitch" and its realistic and expressive artistic style, forming a craftsmanship value that machines find difficult to replicate. In2006, Xiang embroidery was included in the first batch of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. In2011,"Xiang Embroidery(Shaping Production Area)" received National Geographical Indication Product Protection. In2023,"Shaping Xiang Embroidery" was awarded the title of"Hunan Province Geographical Indication Product Protection Demonstration Zone". As of2025, there were32 enterprises in Shaping using the geographical indication special mark for Xiang embroidery. From art to daily life, from Changsha to the world, the"Ballet on the Needle Tip" is stitching up an increasing number of global orders.
